System Components :  Gas Turbine Inlet Evaporative Cooling

Static gas turbine inlet with evaporative cooling and chilled water coils.

Evaporative cooling of gas turbine inlets offers a simple method of increasing combustion air mass flow. Air flows through a wetted medium and is sensibly cooled as some of the liquid water changes to gaseous water. This thermodynamic process is known as adiabatic cooling and, from a practical standpoint, occurs along a process line of constant wet bulb temperature.

The evaporative cooler consists of a stainless steel housing, water distribution piping, valves, flow meters, water pump(s), water distribution header(s), media (cellulose or glass fiber), media supports, drift removal system, water collection tank, bleed system and drain piping. Water quality is the responsibility of the customer or end user. However, Pneumafil establishes a baseline design point for bleed rate based on maximum evaporation rate.

Materials

The entire cooler system (tank, roof, floor, side walls...) is constructed of 304 stainless steel. The tank is watertight and fabricated from 10 ga. (minimum) material, as is the cooler casing (roof, walls, floor). No loose hardware is used anywhere by default. The system is structurally capable of handling a negative gage pressure of 10 inches of water.

Distribution System

The water distribution system creates an even wetting of the media without allowing carry-over. Distribution pads are used beneath the distribution header, direct water to the left and right side of the media banks. Flow meters and valves facilitate proper set-up and adjustability.

Media and Media Supports

The media pack is made of cellulose or glass fiber, bound with a resin. This ěpaperî is corrugated to minimize resistance to airflow and to ensure that the recirculated water flows toward the inlet face, thus preventing carryover (drift).

The media pack is sized for a face velocity of no more than 610 f.p.m. and pack depth is typically 14 inches. Our designs provide adequate supports to hold the media firmly in position against dead and pressure loading. Lower media supports include baffles to prevent air bypass.

Moisture Separators

Moisture separation is provided downstream of the cooler media so that no water droplets are carried off into the clean air plenum or turbine.

Recirculation Pumps

Pump motors are selected for continuous duty and provided with a disconnect switch. Horsepower and voltage vary with application. As a minimum, the pumps feature cast iron scrolls, stainless steel shafts and bronze impellers. Of course, other materials may be specified, depending on the application. Each pump is equipped with a removable, corrosion resistant suction screen.

Water Supply

The water supply is sized to deliver the required amount of water to the system when the supply pressure is a minimum of 40 psig at the make-up water supply connection on the cooler. Standard piping is schedule 80 CPVC (polyvinyl chloride) and each pumpís tank is equipped with a float valve to maintain an adequate water level and avoid cavitation. Float valves will have a minimum static pressure rating of 80 psig and each supply system is equipped a manually operated valve for quickly filling or washing the tank.

Water Collection Tank (Sump Tank)

Each cooler module is supplied with a drain pan to collect excess water as it exits the media. Each tank and water supply system are carefully designed to ensure that the pump suction stays immersed during start-up and wetting of the media. Tank(s) are equipped with an air bypass baffle.

Drain

All systems include an overflow drain (open always) and a tank drain (provided with a valve). During design, drain line size, flow and slope are evaluated against published standards for drain line capacity to ensure proper performance.

Bleed System

Inlet evaporative cooling systems feature a bleed system to prevent concentration of dissolved solids. The system incorporates a flow meter and valve for adjustment.

Service Access

All media, piping and pumps are typically accessible via a hinged door (standard opening 24" wide by 72" tall). All doors are gasketed to prevent air bypass.
